The 3rd Annual VSCA National Champion

It is a 1973 Chaparral SSII owned by Dan Lewallen from Winona, Kansas. Dan traveled 1312 to attend this show and he is one happy person right now! Once again the voting was very close , with Dan edging out about five others by one point. Congrats Dan!
The show was held in the beautiful Coeur D'Alene, Idaho area at the Kootenai County Fair Grounds. There was a lot of inside display room, but being the weather was so great many decided to set up outside. The award ceremony was held on a Cruise ship on Lake Coeur D'Alene.
Some of the nice sleds at the 3rd Annual VSCA National that you do not see everyday!

2nd Annaul VSCA Show Championships
The 2nd Annual Show in Springfield, Mass. was another huge sucsess. The show was well run and the sleds were top notch. Howard Billington was the big winner of the weekend with his Viking taking the top honor as the "2nd Annual VSCA National Show Champion"
Here is a few more pictures of the show. Watch for full coverage in the December issue of the VSM.

More to come soon.
The 2nd Annual VSCA
National Show Championships
Ok Guys and Gals, only 13 days to go until the 2nd Annual "Vsca National Vintage Show Sled championships" in Springflield, Ma. This show is a two day indoor event. In order to show your sleds at this event all sleds need to be in the building on Friday before 9pm or Sat 7am to 9am - doors close to show sleds at 9am prompt. For more info go to: www.sledmass.com. Andy Holland and his crew have worked very hard on getting this show ready. Judy and I look forward to seeing you all in the east very soon.
Here is a slide show sent in by Andy Holland from MA. Take a few minutes and enjoy!
The Princeton Outlaw Grass Drags are coming up this weekend Aug. 25-26th. Judy and I will have the VSCA trailer centered on the east end of the track again. Stop by the VSCA booth and say Hi. You can also drop off any "Reader Rides" you may want to be in the magazine! Rumor has it there is already many more Vintage sleds than last year signed up.
See You all there!
Judy and I just returned from the Grantsburg, WI. World Water Cross Championships. It was another great show, besides the weather turning a little damp on Sunday. Ya, can you believe that, it really rained, that is not something you see much of in Central, MN right now. I believe Kevin and Evan hosted about 97 Vintage show Sleds. With the Hockey Association this year they have recruited Duke Tucker to head the event. I must say he is a very exciting person to talk with. He is looking at building all aspects of the show including the Vintage Part. The one thing Duke will be working hard on for next year? Vintage Watercross on Friday night! So any of you with the old 84 and older water sleds, drag them out and start polishing them up. This should be an excellent addition to the Vintage show.

(Left) Brett Miller had the find of the day. A guy stopped by his display and ask if he would like another one of those Z's. The price was really right! (Right) Those Arctic Cats are real Chick Magnets! |
Stop by the VSCA booth and say Hi at the following shows!

CJ Ramstad Dies in Car Crash
CJ Ramstad and his son, JJ, were both killed in a head-on car crash in Minneapolis at 5:00 pm CST. Details of the accident are not confirmed at this time. CJ leaves behind his wife Karla, daughter Marly and a host of lifelong friends who respected and admired his love for and incredible insight into the snowmobile, motorcycle and ATV business. CJ was famous for his strong opinions and valuable perspective on the industry. He published several books and volumes of magazine editorial since the early sixties. His work as a photo journalist was unprecedented and his archive of pictures is a treasured legacy reaching back to the very beginning of the snowmobile industry. Most of all, he brought creative impetus to the business with magazines like Snow Week, Sno-Goer, Minnesota Snowmobiling, Supertrax, All-Terrain Vehicle and Minnesota Off-Road. Always on the watch for injustices and bad politics, CJ was an outspoken critic whose research was impeccable and his opinions immersed in truth. He will be sadly missed and long remembered.

The Vintage snowmobile world lost a great person Friday night.
As most of you may already know, Tracy and his son Alex were lost last Friday night in a senseless act of violence. Tracy's wife Hilary is still in Intensive Care at North Memorial Hospital, but in speaking with Tony tonight her condition has improved cosiderably since yesterday. We pray for her speedy recovery.
At the request of Tony, Wendy, Theron and the rest of the Krueger Family We will be holding the event as scheduled this weekend, as it is what Tracy would have wanted us to do. Tracy spent many hours along with Travis Boesch setting up the classes, writing the rules and solicitating prize money for this event. There are two 4' traveling trophies that will be awarded to the champion in each 440 Liquid Mod Stock and 440 Free Air classes. Along with $200 added to each of those classes. There is a additional $600 to be spead out in several of the other classes along with 100% payback. The track on Saturday the 10th will 500' long and on Sunday the 11th will go to 660' for the regular MSDRS event. Both Saturday and Sunday the racing is scheduled to begin at noon, any classes not completed on Saturday will be run first on Sunday before the regular MSDRS race begins. Both days should hold some great racing action. This event coinsides with the Waseca Sleigh and Cutter Festival.
On Friday night the 9th there will be a benifit dance for the Krueger family at the VFW in Waseca. A fund has been set up for those that would like to make contribution, when I have the complete information I will post it on the MSDRS website. MSDRS will be donating all proceeds from this weekends event to the fund being set up for the Krueger Family. If you have anyting that you would like to dontate that could be used as prizes or raffle items please feel free to contact me.

Snowmobile Racing Returns to IA.

This weekend December 16th and 17th the Grandstands were full for the WPSA Pro Ice event. The weather was warm, near 60 degrees, but the track held up well. The WPSA allowed SLEDS racing circuit to run five Vintage classed. They were 340-440 super stock, 340-440 super mod, and IFS 440X class.

Competition was close in the super stock classes |
From the Snopro's to the Super Stock classes the racing was good and everyone had a wonderful time racing on this track. The track was very fast. For those that stayed home this year, you will not want to pass up this race next year. If the weather allows this may grow into one of the top places for snowmobile racing in the future.

It was a show that shared a lot of laughter, serious talks, and emotions that brought many to tears. Yes, it was a great show!

HAYDAYS O6
Once again this year the Vintage sleds proved to be a big hit. The grass path
around "Memory Lane"
was worn to a dirt trail by the end of the weekend. The tent had some very nice sleds for spectators to look at. There was a lot of good stories of trail rides people were on with the old sleds. A lot of Vintage stuff in the swap meet. SRX's, RV's, Z's, EXT's, TX's and a good selection of trail stuff. It was not as hot this year as it has been in the past. This made it a lot more comfortable to walk the rows and look for treasures.
The stretched Panther is always a big hit,
This year was also the year of the 67's. It was allot of fun watching the old sleds on the drag track, with Kevin Lehse's twin engine, YES, twin engine, not twin cylinder, Polaris, with Megaphones really tear up the track.

OUTLAW GRASS DRAGS, PRINCETON,MN
Brian Sutton and the Outlaw Grass Drag crew had there hands full with the large number of entries in the Vintage race classes. Not only were the sleds fast, but they were rare and very well presented. Like the Alluette Super (below left)
As the day went on the sled to beat was Tracy krugers, 76 Rupp Magnum (below left) with his sister Wendy Kruger as the driver. The Krugers took home $1000.00 for their efforts. Mike Johnson did a nice job of displaying his rare Scorpion racer (below right), along with many other great sleds in the Vintage area.

What about a 800 KK, with a never fired 793 sitting in it. Oh ya, the original 800 came along with the deal.Check out the 76 Arctic Snopro purchased by Tom Ische. Now this has not been 100% verified, but it appears this was the sled raced by Jim Dimmerman in 76. As you can see there are many other nice sleds in the back ground of these pictures, like a Allouette Super, 71 EXT, Speedways, TX's, and a Sno Pony. There was also a lot of engines and other parts on the pile. What a way to spend a Saturday afternoon! |
