Pro Vintage Snowmobile Olympus

January 1-2, 2011

Gogebic County Fairgrounds

Ironwood, MI 49938

These specially prepared vintage sleds will be reaching speeds near 100 miles per hour on our ½ mile ice track. Your safety is important to us so reflective safety vests will be required if your news group would like to photograph trackside. We can furnish vests if you do not have any. Tourism and special events like this are very important to the economy in the Western UP. We appreciate all of the support in promoting this event that you can provide for us.

The Pro Vintage Snowmobile Olympus will take place at The Gogebic County Fairgrounds in Ironwood Michigan, January 1 & 2, 2011. This event is being organized by the Gogebic County Fair Board and is sanctioned by the Pro Vintage Racing.

Racers have indicated that they wanted to return to the famed ½ mile oval in Ironwood.  Already, response has been favorable with the top drivers in Pro Vintage Racing committing to attend the event. We anticipate in excess of 400 racers along with their families and crew members to be in Ironwood for this event. In addition to great racing throughout the weekend, we plan to feature a vintage sled display, vintage snowmobile parade and a vendor’s exhibit area in our new exposition building. We will be inviting past Olympus Champions to participate in our meet the fans sessions that will be scheduled throughout the weekend. In all, a great weekend of not only racing but good times and great memories will be celebrated in Ironwood on January 1 & 2, 2011.

Three time world champion snowmobile racer, Steve Ave, will be the master of ceremonies and special guest of the Pro Vintage Snowmobile Olympus in Ironwood, Michigan on January 1-2, 2011. Racing out of one of the first Ski-Doo dealerships in the US, Ave was the first semi-pro driver to race the Ski-Doo brand in the Midwest. His dedication to the sport laid the ground work for Ski-Doo factory race teams. Ave was a fierce competitor in the early years, establishing his presence at every event he competed in. He won the World Championship in 1966 and was the first repeat winner in 1968. Retiring from racing in 1973, Ave remained active in snowmobiling, running the family Ski-Doo dealership in Hurley, Wisconsin. He remained active in various snowmobile organizations concerned with the development of racing and recreational aspects of snowmobiling. Ave remains respected not only on the local level, but on the National and International level as one of the pioneers of the sport of snowmobiling. Ave will be on the grounds throughout the weekend for photo ops, interviews and autographs. Action takes place at the 1971 Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus. Vintage sleds, similar to these, restored to perfect condition will compete in the Pro Vintage Snowmobile Olympus at Ironwood, MI January 1-2, 2011.

Past Champions Encouraged to Attend

Time to go through the race memorabilia and dig out your old Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus medals. Pro Vintage Snowmobile Olympus race organizers will offer free admission to all past Olympus Champions. The Pro-vintage Snowmobile Olympus will be held January 1-2, 2011 at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds in Ironwood, Michigan. Racers and fans will remember that the Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus was one of the premier races in the Western Hemisphere with competitors from around the world. The toughest drivers in the sport once raced around the famed ½ mile oval during a time when factory teams ruled the top divisions. Past Champions wishing to attend can also be included in the race program and participate in celebrity photo ops and autograph sessions.

Ice Ovals Rock Rapids, IA

December 18-19 ORA Ice Ovals

2010 Rock Rapids, IA

The races in Rock Rapids IA started the year off on a very high note. This will leave the next venues with a challenge to top this event. The sponsoring group had the infrastructure in excellent shape. The weather was perfect for racing. The drivers were well prepared with very nice looking and competitive machines.

In the IfS SnoPro class the new AAEN team with drivers Devin Fackrell (Logan, Utah), Ken Kitzman (Otsego, Mn), Lon Ashton (Monticello, Mn) had new paint schemes which were very cool and their sleds ran well all day. Travis Hilmerson, (Little Falls, Mn) Dave Neuman, (Oak Grove, Mn) and Matt Goede (New Germany, Mn) ran strong scoring 1st place wins.

Super Mod Leaf spring classes were well represented with a new comer by the name of Bradee Miaskoch of Willow River, Mn placing first in many classes. Matt Goede (New Germany, Mn) had a good day along with Randy logelin, (Waconia, Mn) Mike Smith, (Wasilla, AK) Todd Schnetzer, (Hortonville, WI) Brandon Gentz (Iron Ridge, WI) and Jeff Lausten (Sebeka, Mn)

The Super Stock classes ran well putting on one heck of a show. In the fan classes it was a constant battle between Dave Dahl (Miltona, Mn) and Mike Pappenfus (Oseceola, WI) for top honors. Nathan Westlund (Strathcona, Mn), Josh Miller (Hutchinson, Mn) ran very strong in the Super Stock Liquid classes, but it was not enough to hold off the charge of Donny Fedie (Mondovi, WI). Donny also went on to win the Coveted Jim Steenhoven Memorial Cup race.
